The Sunnmore Alps in Norway are the site of my first experience of trekking by myself in a wilderness.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a friendlier people among lovelier landscapes than in the mountains south of Alesund. Just be prepared to mortgage your house in order to buy a hamburger and a beer.

On a whim (thanks to an amazing airfare), I flew from Cardiff to Alesund in Norway in 2015. Carrying everything on my back, I set off the next day for a few days in the wilderness of the Sunnmore Alps by myself. A hard winter and a cool summer meant there was more snow than usual, which meant I had to adjust my route because of impassable passes. But what a time it was!
